I think it has to do with the recent transistion in the community from making goofy little indie games that never really left the RPG Maker scene to actually making commercial products.

#YANFLY RPG MAKER VX ACE HOW TO#

I dunno how to word it without sounding whiny or ungrateful. Now lots of stuff is behind paywalls and such - which is absoulutely fine, they deserve compensation for their hardwork, but it makes aspects of the community feel a little less welcoming in some respects, I guess. It gave off a sense of selflessness in the community, where people just partook in the fun of making games together.

On the other hand, I really do miss the early days of the RPG Maker scene, where people gave away resources for free as long as you give them credit. Especially since if you want to make an impressive project, you're undoubtabtly going to be spending some cash somewhere, whether it be art, code, music or even design. On one hand, it's totally reasonable for authors to charge for their creations, they put in a lot of effort, and one dollar isn't much for most people. This stuff always gave me mixed feelings. If through some stroke of luck Yanfly finds this thread and reads my post, thank you so much for the past 4 years of making RPG Maker MV much more flexible and feature rich for people like me who can't script to save our lives. If anything from the change I'm just glad that Yanfly understands and is ok with people like me who did get them before the switch to paid content keeping what we have as long as the terms are followed, it's a smart move and if I ever lose my set I will buy the set from Yanfly's itch.io to replace them. Now that the engine is "Complete" as it were, I can understand wanting payment for the whole thing, and $30 isn't bad for the complete set (or a 5 dollar tier for a month on Patreon also works) for it. These plugins take/took time to make, and Yanfly spent 4 years doing nothing but making the Yanfly Engine for RMMV with only a Patreon to keep financed. On the other hand, I can totally and fully understand where Yanfly is coming from with the decision. On the one hand, it's a disappointing thing to see, so many plugins that have been free for 4 years suddenly behind a paywall, had I not gotten them all already (as I'm making a "Guide" out of the help files so I have a printed out book of all of the commands and such) I'd probably be a bit upset about it considering I thought until I looked into it that I was just 4 short.

I'm a little glad I grabbed them all just about a month ago myself, I just checked with the youtube channel and saw the retirement message, and learned I do have the plugins that just got the youtube videos for them, so apparently I actually do have the entire collection in their most updated forms from right before the switch over (I don't expect any major updates to any of them since many haven't had an update in months to years). Of course, you should still consider the now-formal commercial route as well to show your support for Yanfly if you use their plugins (especially in any sort of commercial capacity - you can probably afford the $1 USD paywall )

I've not actually been a heavy user of Yanfly plugins in the past, but I'm kind of glad I ran a wget-siterip over the repository back in Spring now.Įdit: Actually, being mostly text based, for anyone looking for the old site they should try looking at any sort of archive site, like - you might find scripts and instructions there still for something that is no longer available. Several other RMMV scripters and resource providers have began seeking commercial distribution for their assets over the last couple years (that I've noticed) and I think that might have had more impact on this recent decision than the theft, tbh. While this current model sounds kind of silly commercially, it may just be a panicked introduction prodded on by the recent theft-concerns. There have been rumors of Yanfly potentially moving away from free-scripts in the past. Making any sort of claim that a paywall will somehow prevent theft is silly - and I rather think this has been a long-time-coming regardless.
